Jane Phipps

Founder and Program Director

“Masters Leadership Program

of San Antonio”

In April 2000, Jane and her husband, Bob, sold their fresh fruit and vegetable processing company, Fresh from Texas, which they started in 1980.  She was responsible for the financial management of the company along with overseeing the marketing and human resource functions.

In 2004 after four years of retirement, Jane was excited to bring the Masters Leadership Program of San Antonio and Bexar County, modeled after a successful program in Naples, FL., to our city.  Having served on numerous civic and nonprofit boards, Jane felt this program, under the United Way umbrella, could provide a new pool of knowledgeable, qualified and dedicated board members to our community’s non-profit and civic boards and commissions. Now in it’s fifth year, the Masters Leadership Program has over 200 graduates improving our community with over 2,000 volunteer hours each month.

Her current and past civic involvement include a state board appointment to the Texas Guaranteed Student Loan Corporation, where she served as chair, USAA Federal Savings Bank board of directors and Accion Texas board of directors.  Jane has a BS in marketing from the University of Colorado.  She and Bob have two grown children and one granddaughter.

What is the Masters Leadership Program of San Antonio?

The Masters Leadership Program (MLP) is an opportunity for San Antonio's best and brightest business executives and other community leaders to stay involved in, and informed about, the issues and challenges facing our city.

Run under the United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County umbrella, the MLP’s goal is to translate the knowledge gained from the program into a pool of graduates available to volunteer their leadership and good counsel as advisors on the boards of our community’s most important and respected agencies and public commissions.

Family of Rotary

Best wishes to Richard Batz who is recovering from surgery.  We hope to see him back at Rotary soon.

The Power of Rotary

Rotary’s reach and ability to get things done was demonstrated recently thanks to the efforts of our own Russ Rinklin and the Carlisle Rotary Club in Pennsylvania.

Russ heard about a golfing store that was going out of business.  The store, “4 Aces Golf,” was donating 15,000 used golf clubs to a program called “Golf for Our Troops, Inc.”  The problem was the daunting task of packing up and shipping 15,000 clubs in a very short period of time.  Russ thought who better to handle a tough situation than Rotary and called the local Rotary Club.

The Carlisle Club swung into action and in just four hours over two days had the clubs packed, loaded on the truck and ready to ship out to our wounded soldiers.

Thanks to Russ for his quick action and President Juan Garcia-Tunon and the Carlisle Rotary Club for their extraordinary effort.

This Month’s Rotarian

Have you read the Rotarian magazine this month?  Do you know how other clubs are tackling the big issues of the day? Is there a way for our club to get involved?  Read the February issue and let us know.

Pick up the February issue and read about:

¨ Rotary’s unique presentation of the story of polio

¨ Superstar opera singer Katherine Jenkins who will be singing at the RI Convention in Birmingham, England

¨ A Missouri Rotary Club’s portable pantry to meet food emergencies in the Ozarks

¨ Global literacy efforts
