    No. 49
     Featured Speaker:

Sheryl Sculley

City Manager

"City of San Antonio:

Current Events"

Chair of the Day:  Ben Brewer

Sheryl Sculley became San Antonio’s City Manager in November 2005 with 31 years in local government. As the City’s chief executive officer, she manages a full-service municipal government corporation as directed by policies of the City Council. She oversees an annual operating and capital budget of more than $2 billion that serves a community of more than 1.3 million residents and 430 square miles. Ms. Sculley supervises the activities of all City departments that include more than 12,000 employees.

In her three and a half years as City Manager, she initiated major changes within the City organization. She appointed more than 60 executives including Deputy and Assistant City Managers, Department and Assistant Department Directors.

Ms. Sculley reorganized the administrative structure, developed a two-year balanced operating budget, and recommended a $550 million, five year bond program that is the largest in City history. Her budget recommendations closely followed City Council priorities by adding 234 police officers, 131 fire and EMS personnel, increased street maintenance resources, more code enforcement officers, and needed financial reserves. Garbage collection is also being automated on an expedited schedule. Under her leadership, she has led the effort to bring greater transparency to the City’s Budget and Bond programs.

Before coming to San Antonio, Ms. Sculley served as the Assistant City Manager for the City of Phoenix for 16 years, assisting in the day-to-day management of 14,000 employees and a $2.6 billion annual operating budget. Among her many duties in Phoenix, in the number two city management position, Ms. Sculley led the redevelopment of the city’s downtown including a biomedical campus, a downtown university campus, the $600 million expansion of the Phoenix Convention Center, a 1000- room full service convention headquarters hotel, commercial and housing development, a new City Hall and new Municipal Court. Prior to her service with the City of Phoenix, Ms. Sculley worked for the City of Kalamazoo, Michigan, for 15 years including five years as City Manager.

How do you want to serve?

Rotary has many opportunities for service.  Have you found your passion yet?

Are you looking for a committee that will allow you to meet more of your fellow Rotarians?  How about one of our club service committees?

New Member Orientation

Be part of the team that introduces Rotary to our new members.  Orientation is held once a month.  Committee members will be responsible for covering a certain part of the orientation.

New Member Introductions

New members are introduced as often as possible.  Committee members give a brief introduction of the new member from the podium.  Your time commitment will depend on the number of new members being introduced during the year.

New Member Recruitment

Help spread the word about Rotary and our club—be a club builder!  Committee members actively recruit from a targeted list of top executives.  The club received many membership inquiries through the website and phone calls.  Committee members also host these potential members at a club luncheon.  This is one of the club’s most important committees.

Program Committee

Do you have ideas for great programs?  Join the program committee and help book top speakers all on topics.  Lively programs bring members to the luncheon every week.  Help us plan programs that will bring more of our Rotarians together for fellowship and service.

Admissions

Rotary does have membership standards.  The Admissions Committee screens potential members to make sure they fit the membership criteria and have the heart for service necessary to be a Rotarian.

Meeting Service: Lunch Ticket, Visitor Registration, Sergeant-at-Arms

Do you enjoy meeting and interacting with as many club members as possible?  Service on one of the active meeting service committees.   You’ll work on rotating schedules on any or all of the committees to help us run our meetings smoothly and with Rotarian hospitality.

Lunch ticket:  distribute lunch tickets, sell lunch tickets

Visitor registration:  help visitors to our club sign in and find their way

Sergeant-at-Arms:  help visitors find their way to the buffet and the ballroom, help Rotarians who may need help with seating or the buffet, help during the meeting by closing doors, turning off lights, maintaining quiet.

Media Relations

This committee will be very active this year.  Your help is needed to update and create marketing materials for our club.  Help us brand the Rotary Club of San Antonio in our community.  This committee also handles all the media coverage for the club.  Help us get the word out about our speakers, service projects and big events.

Contact the Rotary office at 222-8242, x101 or assistant@rotarysa.org to sign up for any of these committees.
