July 29, 2009

    No. 5
     Featured Speaker:

Nim Kidd

City of San Antonio

Office of Emergency Management

Chair of the Day:  Mike Bennett

Nim Kidd was appointed to the San Antonio Fire Department in April of 1993.  He has held the rank of Firefighter, Fire Apparatus Operator, Lieutenant, Captain and District Fire Chief.  Chief Kidd was formerly assigned as the Lieutenant in charge of the SAFD Technical Rescue Team and Captain of the SAFD Hazardous Material Response Team. Nim has been a member of the Texas Task Force 1 Urban Search and Rescue (US&R) Team since 1997 and has responded to several disasters including the World Trade Center collapse in September 2001.  He is the Assistant Task Force Leader.

Chief Kidd has been the City Emergency Manager since 2004, and has managed the City’s response efforts for over a dozen Local, State, Major, and Presidential Disaster Declarations.  Chief Kidd is also designated as the City’s Homeland Security Director and manages the Homeland Security Grant Program and is the Chair of the Urban Area Security Initiative Working Group that has infused over $36 Million into the City’s preparedness efforts.

Chief Kidd has served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Emergency Management Association of Texas, and currently serves on the Governor’s EMS and Trauma Advisory Council-Disaster Committee and the Governor’s Texas Preparedness Advisory Council for the Division of Emergency Management.

Chief Kidd and his wife, Dr. Emily Kidd, share three children together.

Emergency management is a comprehensive system to respond to emergencies or disasters impacting our community.  The mission of the City of San Antonio Office of Emergency Management (SAOEM) is to coordinate activities of the City departments responsible for continued operations during disasters, coordinate agreements for the use of resources, communicate with State and Federal agencies, and provide education and training to citizens and municipal employees.

Emergency Management Encompasses:

Prevention:  Actions taken to avoid an incident or to intervene to stop an incident from occurring in the effort to protect lives and property.

Preparedness:  Activities such as planning, training, public education and outreach to create awareness of potential dangers and increase readiness in our community.

Response:  Use of available resources to meet the needs of the community when disaster strikes. Depending on the severity of the disaster, this can include local, county, State and Federal resources, to include fire and EMS services, public works and law enforcement.
