 Volume  #98

January 6, 2010

    No. 27
     Featured Speaker:

Larry Johnson

“You Can if  You Think  You Can”

Chair of the Day:  Ed Conroy

ARE YOU AN OPTIMIST OR A PESSIMIST?

IS YOUR GLASS HALF EMPTY OR HALF FULL?

Larry Johnson believes that success and happiness are a matter of attitude and a matter of choice.  They rest on our ability to learn to rebound from adversity and follow our dreams.

“YOU CAN IF YOU THINK YOU CAN” is the title of his second book, based on more than twenty-seven years of conducting highly successful motivational workshops.  He says that the worth of our lives comes not from what other people may think or say about us but from what we believe about ourselves.

Hope, encouragement, motivation and practical strategies to overcome adversity, rebuild self-esteem and fulfill one’s most cherished Dream goals is what his book is all about.

Larry proudly claims himself to be a cock-eyed optimist and, listening to his positive message, just may change your attitude and change your life.

Larry P. Johnson is a graduate of Northwestern University’s School of Speech in Evanston, Illinois, with a Master’s in Economics & Latin American Studies from La Universidad de las Americas in Mexico City.

His professional background includes:

21 years as a Human Resources manager with AT&T Communications.  He is Accredited by the National Personnel Accreditation Institute.

22 years as a radio and television broadcaster in Mexico City, Chicago and San Antonio.  He was the first blind American newscaster on Mexican television.

28 years as a motivational speaker and workshop presenter. He is a dynamic international keynote speaker and workshop presenter having presented for audiences in Mexico, Japan and the United States.

He is author of  MEXICO BY TOUCH: True Life Experiences of a Blind American Deejay, an inspirational account of his adventures and misadventures living and working in Mexico for 17 years; RELAX AND LIVE, a professionally narrated guided relaxation exercise on CD; and his latest book, YOU CAN IF YOU THINK YOU CAN, REBOUND FROM ADVERSITY AND FOLLOW YOUR DREAMS.

Volunteers Needed

Volunteers are needed to work the U.S. Army All-American Awards Dinner the night of January 8.   We need members to help guide guests through the convention center, seat guests and generally make sure everything goes smoothly.

Volunteers will have to be at the Convention Center no later than 5:30 PM.  Your duties will end at 7:00 PM when the dinner starts.  If a volunteer wants to stay for the dinner, you must purchase a ticket.  Please contact the Rotary office at 222-8242, x101 or assistant@rotarysa.org if you are interested in volunteering.

We also need volunteers to help with Shadow Day on February 3.   Rotarians are asked to take a Diploma Plus student to their place of business for the morning.  We need your help showing these students the possibilities awaiting them if they continue their studies.

All you have to do is pick up your student that morning at the Bright Shawl.  They will shadow you through the morning learning about the business world.  Bring them back to Rotary for the regular noon luncheon and you’re done.  It may only be a few hours of your day, but it will make a lasting impression on our students.

We need at least 60 volunteers to make this event a success.  Please contact the Rotary office at 222-8242, x101, email assistant@rotarysa.org or contact Shadow Day Chair Amy Contreras at

amy.contreras@ey.com

Start 2010 by Finishing Your Paul Harris Fellow

Do you know how much you’ve given towards your Paul Harris Fellow? Rotarians are asked to give $100 every year to the Rotary International Foundation.  Your contribution helps fund service projects and educational scholarships throughout the world.  Once you’ve given $,1000 you will become a Paul Harris Fellow—one of the highest honors a Rotarian can achieve.

Contact the Rotary office to find out how much more you need to become a Paul Harris Fellow.

The District asks every member to participate in “Every Rotarian Every Year.”  Donate your $100 and help our club reach the 100% participation level.

To find out more about the Rotary International Foundation and its programs, visit the RI website at www.rotary.org.

Donate Your Old Eye Glasses

For many, the new year means a new look.  Don’t throw out those old eye glasses!  Bring your old glasses to any Rotary meeting or drop them off at the Rotary office.  Rotarian Dr. Tom Ayres will have the glasses refurbished and donated to a world-wide vision mission.

Are you on a Committee?

Start the new year with a new commitment to service.  If you’re not currently serving on a committee, there are still many committees that can use your help.  Do you have an idea for a new service project?  Let us know.

For a complete listing and information on each committee, contact the Rotary office at 222-8242, x101.  We’ll help you pick a committee that fits your interests and time restrictions.
