 Volume  #98

February 17, 2010

    No. 34
     Featured Speaker:

Sichan Siv

Former US Ambassador to the United Nations

“From the Killing Fields to the White House”

Chair of the Day:  Keith Orme

Ambassador Sichan Siv will tell the story of his happy youth in Cambodia, the takeover of his country by the Khmer Rouge, the “killing fields,” his harrowing escape to Thailand, his years in the U.S. from picking apples to becoming U.S. Ambassador to the UN and marrying a Texas gal who was working at the United Nations. His is a story of the greatness of the United States and how fortunate we all are.

Sichan Siv is the international bestselling author of Golden Bones, an American dream story, published by HarperCollins.  He was nominated by President George W. Bush in 2001 and unanimously confirmed by the Senate as a United States ambassador to the United Nations, serving until 2006.  In June 2005, Ambassador Siv addressed the 60th anniversary of the U.N. in San Francisco, in the footsteps of Presidents Truman in 1945, Eisenhower 1955, Johnson 1965, Secretary of State Schultz 1985, and Clinton 1995.

From 1989 to 1993, Ambassador Siv served as deputy assistant to President George H.W. Bush and as deputy assistant secretary of State.  Ambassador Siv holds a master of international affairs from Columbia University.   He escaped Cambodia’s killing fields in 1976 and was resettled as a refugee in Wallingford, Connecticut.

Ambassador Siv is the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including the “George H.W. Bush Award for Outstanding Public Service.” Currently he provides global strategic advice and gives motivational speeches around the USA and the world.  He is a volunteer in the U.S. Air Force Auxiliary Civil Air Patrol and San Antonio Aviation Police.  He is married to the former Martha Pattillo of Pampa, Texas.

Ambassador Siv will be autographing copies of his book, Golden Bones, after the meeting.

Successful Shadow Day

Our February 3 Shadow Day program proved to be beneficial to both student and Rotarian.  Our students came back with a better knowledge of what to expect in the “real world.”  Our Rotarians told us how impressed they were with their shadows.

Mark your calendar now for the first Wednesday in February, 2011 so you don’t miss this experience.

Thanks to all our Rotarian volunteers for taking the time to make a difference in the lives of our D+ students.

Special thanks to Chair Amy Contreras for a great job!
