At the May 26 luncheon of the Rotary Club of San Antonio, members, past presidents, district leaders, family, and friends gathered for a special occasion unlike any other: the celebration of Executive Director Ann Swift’s retirement after 22 years of dedicated service to the Club. What began as a surprise tribute quickly became a heartfelt reflection on the countless ways Ann has shaped Rotary in San Antonio and beyond.
Twenty-Two Years of Steady Leadership
Several past presidents shared stories of Ann’s impact, beginning with the pivotal moment she stepped into the executive director role in 2004. As former Club President Jay Stanley recalled, promoting Ann proved to be “the best decision” he ever made. Her steady temperament, confidence, and commitment to excellence helped generations of Rotary leaders succeed, often behind the scenes and without seeking recognition.
Throughout the afternoon, speakers described Ann as the person who kept the Club running smoothly through challenges and transitions, providing calm guidance while helping members and presidents alike look their best.
Service Above Self in Action
Ann’s contributions extended far beyond weekly meetings and Club operations. Members highlighted her role in supporting international peace initiatives, scholarship programs, and humanitarian efforts that have impacted lives around the world. Colleagues credited her as an advisor, problem solver, and trusted partner whose fingerprints could be found on many of the Club’s greatest successes.
In recognition of her extraordinary service, Ann received numerous honors during the celebration, including a Paul Harris Fellow recognition, Rotary’s Service Above Self Award, a commemorative memory book from past presidents, and a Certificate of Excellence recognizing her distinguished service and commitment to improving the quality of life throughout the San Antonio region.
A Well-Deserved Celebration
The afternoon was filled with laughter, poetry, music, gifts, and surprises—including a trip to Chicago and a travel package to Northern Ireland in recognition of her support for Rotary’s international peace programs.
When Ann finally took the podium, she summed up her feelings simply: “It’s been a great 24 years. You guys are like family to me.”
While her tenure as executive director is coming to a close, Ann’s impact on the Rotary Club of San Antonio will be felt for years to come. Her legacy is one of service, leadership, friendship, and an unwavering commitment to Rotary’s mission of Service Above Self.
