Weekly Luncheon

At the April 15 luncheon of the Rotary Club of San Antonio, we heard from Mike Howard, Chairman and CEO of Howard Energy Partners. A South Texas native and first-generation energy professional, Mike shared how he entered the industry seeking economic opportunity—but stayed after discovering a deeper purpose.

From Paycheck to Purpose

Mike reflected on his journey from working in the oil field to building a company rooted in meaning. While his early motivation was financial stability, his long-term vision became centered on impact.

He spoke about intentionally growing Howard Energy Partners in San Antonio, resisting the pull of larger industry hubs to invest locally. Over time, this commitment shaped a culture focused not just on performance, but on purpose. That purpose—delivering “positive energy”—guides both the company’s operations and its people.

Energy and Economic Reality

Mike outlined three key truths: energy is essential to quality of life, demand is increasing globally, and producing energy is complex. He emphasized that access to energy is directly tied to prosperity, noting that regions with limited energy resources often face higher poverty rates and lower standards of living.

As developing countries grow, their energy needs will expand significantly. At the same time, modern economies rely on more than just electricity—industrial processes, transportation, and manufacturing all require diverse energy sources.

With the rise of artificial intelligence, data centers, and domestic manufacturing, the U.S. is entering a period of rapid energy demand growth. However, infrastructure, workforce capacity, and supply chains are still catching up—creating challenges that will require long-term planning and investment.

A Shared Responsibility

Mike closed by emphasizing that energy policy and access are not abstract issues—they directly affect affordability, opportunity, and quality of life.  Expanding access to reliable energy can improve living conditions while also supporting environmental progress through innovation and efficiency.

He also highlighted the local impact of energy challenges, noting that many assistance requests in San Antonio are tied to utility costs. Ensuring access to affordable energy remains a critical issue, both globally and within our own community.

Ultimately, Mike reinforced the idea that business can be a powerful force for good. By creating opportunity, solving complex problems, and investing in communities, companies have the ability to drive meaningful and lasting impact.
