On September 3 the Rotary Club of San Antonio hosted Ben Emery, Engineering Project Manager at JCB, one of the world’s leading construction and agricultural equipment manufacturers. Starting as an apprentice over 20 years ago, Ben celebrates his 19th anniversary this week in his full-time role with the company. His journey from apprenticeship to leading major engineering projects highlights JCB’s commitment to innovation and employee development.
From the UK to San Antonio: A Global Perspective
Ben has worked on significant projects at JCB, including the Greenfield Cab Factory in the UK, where he helped design and oversee advanced manufacturing processes. Now, he leads the development of JCB’s new manufacturing facility in San Antonio, bringing his expertise to a growing Texas community. Relocating to San Antonio 18 months ago, Ben now embraces the local culture.
JCB’s Global Footprint
During his talk, Ben highlighted JCB’s impressive global presence:
- 22 manufacturing sites across 5 countries
- Machines operating in 150 countries worldwide
- Over 300 different types of machines, including backhoe loaders, compactors, skid steers, and military equipment
This perspective emphasizes the scale and innovation that JCB brings to every project, whether in the UK, the U.S., or elsewhere around the world.
Factory 23: A New Era for San Antonio
JCB’s new Factory 23 in San Antonio represents a major investment in the region, promising advanced engineering, cutting-edge manufacturing, and substantial employment opportunities. The facility is projected to employ over 1,500 people, spanning engineers, technicians, manufacturing staff, and support roles.
Beyond jobs, JCB’s presence is expected to create a ripple effect throughout the local economy:
- Partnerships with schools and technical programs can support workforce development.
- Local suppliers and contractors may benefit from new collaborations
- San Antonio’s grows its reputation as a hub for advanced manufacturing.
Ben’s visit highlighted the impact of global companies that invest locally, demonstrating how innovation and community growth go hand in hand.
Why San Antonio?
For an 80-year-old global company like JCB, the choice of where to expand operations is no small decision. Ben noted that San Antonio quickly rose to the top of the list thanks to several key advantages. Its proximity to a major port in Houston, strong rail connectivity, and central location make it ideal for distributing equipment across the U.S.
Equally important was the city’s ready-to-work labor force. JCB had experienced workforce challenges at other sites, but San Antonio offered a stronger pool of skilled workers to support Factory 23’s growth.
Beyond the logistics, Ben emphasized the warmth and hospitality that made San Antonio stand out. From early meetings onward, the city’s leaders and community members made JCB feel welcome, creating an environment where investing locally was a clear and easy decision.
Looking Ahead
San Antonio is poised to benefit from JCB’s expertise, resources, and forward-thinking manufacturing processes. As Factory 23 ramps up production, the community can look forward to economic growth, job creation, and exciting opportunities for local collaboration.
