Visit San Antonio CEO Mario Bass Highlights Tourism’s Impact and Opportunities

August 6, 2025
Weekly Luncheon

Our August 6 luncheon featured an engaging and insightful presentation by Mario Bass, President and CEO of Visit San Antonio. A proud San Antonio native with more than 30 years in the hospitality and tourism industry—including a 23-year career with Marriott—Mario returned home in June to lead the city’s destination marketing organization. His deep personal connection to the city infuses his leadership with both professional expertise and hometown pride.

Mario began by framing tourism as a $21.5 billion economic engine for San Antonio, supporting 150,000 local jobs—one in every eight workers—and generating $277 million in tax revenue in 2023 alone. He emphasized that tourism is more than vacations; it sustains small businesses, fuels economic development, preserves culture, and enhances quality of life for residents.

While leisure travel remains important, Mario noted that conventions and large-scale events are essential for stability, especially in challenging weather or economic conditions. He outlined how San Antonio has lost out on major events—representing over $500 million in potential spending—due to limitations at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center. The proposed expansion, part of the city’s ambitious “Project Marble” sports and entertainment district, could add 200,000 square feet, making San Antonio competitive for high-profile gatherings such as the Ophthalmology convention, with its 26,000 attendees and $20 million annual impact.

Mario cited examples from other cities that have invested heavily in their convention and entertainment districts, stressing that such projects are “game changers” not just for attracting visitors, but for creating vibrant urban spaces for residents. He also underscored the city’s greatest asset—its authentic, welcoming culture—which keeps groups and leisure travelers returning year after year.

In closing, Mario encouraged Rotarians to recognize the vital role tourism plays in San Antonio’s growth and prosperity. His passion for showcasing the city to the world—and ensuring visitors experience the same warmth he grew up with—left the audience both informed and inspired.

Our club is fortunate to host leaders like Mario Bass, whose vision and dedication shape the future of our community while reminding us of the unique spirit that makes San Antonio shine.
